My book is called The Sign of Four. It is about a person named Sherlock Holmes who solves a lot of mysteries. Then one day a beautiful woman began to get strange clues about her long-lost father. She really couldn’t do anything about it so the only thing she could do was to turn to Sherlock Holmes, one of the best detectives there is. After she turned to Sherlock Holmes he replied to her saying “What a pretty little mystery. Yes I would help you darling” Also, he expects that he could solve this mystery without that much trouble happening. The main characters were Sherlock Holmes who was a great detective and he always wears a plaid cover hat, a plaid cover shirt, and maybe some plaid cover shoes too. In this book the story takes place in East India and it could of took place in 1887. The genre of my book is thriller/mystery because it deals with murders, strange letters or notes, and the most important part of it being a mystery is that the main character has to be part of the authorities like Sherlock Holmes because he is a detective. The things about what the author did that I like was that he made the stories exciting and suspenseful, that’s all I like about what the author did. People would like this book because it has murders, suspenseful moments and real exciting parts that people would love. This is my book review about The Sign of Four.

It was July 29, 2007 when the worst disaster of my life. It was a sunny warm Saturday. I was playing basketball with a couple of my friends in the back of my house. We played a game of 50. My friend shot the ball and it went over the old rusty gate. I climbed the gate to get the ball faster. I threw the ball over and climbed the gate to come back to the other side. Then about 2 minutes later I shot the ball over the gate. This time I walked around the gate to get the ball. I threw the ball over the gate once more and then I walked around. Less then ten minutes later I shot the ball over the gate again. I was mad because I was tired of going back and forth to get the ball. I was too tired to walk around the gate so I started to climb. As I was climbing the gate I made it to the top of the gate. As I was jumping to the other side it happened. I fell down and got caught on the gate. The gate was so old and rusty it went through my skin. My shirt was ripped and a lot of blood was just oozing out. I ran in the house crying. My older sister came out of her room and asked “what happened?” I just kept scream “I’m going to die, I’m going to die.” She said “your not going to die.” She rapped some tissue over it, and then she called my god mother and told her what happened. She rushed home and took me to the emergency room. The doctors gave me 32 stitches. I couldn’t do anything for a week like take a shower and ride my bike. I never climbed a gate again.

“I never thought I would see the day……”That me as a young girl still in school doing good and trying to domore. I wanted to be more for myself and for my family. Most girls myage now at fifteen wouldn’t be in school just because they disliked itand wanted to be cool. They skipped just to do something lessimportant maybe good or bad it was a way for them to get out ofschool. Others that ended up pregnant didn’t get the love they thoughtthey disserved so they went to find it some place else temporarily. Some of the things I mentioned are stereo types but some arestatistically proven. That’s why I feel like its my job to love myselfenough so I don’t have to make that horrible Mistake. So this is meencouraging every young girl out there not to be a statistic and makethat horrible Choice.

The Day My Great Grand Mother Died It had been a whole entry month that the Bruce family was checking in and out of the Mass General Hospital. My great grand mother Pearl was placed there for serious help. She could not breathe on her own and she was never feeling good. She was living off the machine and at some points she could not even move. I did not really know Ms. Pearl like that because she spent most of her life back home in Jamaica until she came back to America to try and find a cure for her sickness. Before Ms. Pearl passed away she left back thirteen children. Four boys and nine girls. Also about forty grandchildren and more than ninety great grand children. She passed away at the age of ninety-seven. I know that I didn’t really know her, but I was going to feel my father’s pain. His grand mother had passed and he was never going to feel the same. I believed that heaven was a much better place for her be in, than to be on the earth feeling so much pain. I was going to miss her and so was my family, but I know was going to be in a much better place.

I stayed up and watched movies till I fell asleep. The next day when I was in my bed I felt my phone vibrating on my bed and it was my dad calling me. I answered and he said “Get dressed”. I brushed my teeth and got dressed. I went downstairs and my dad had my brother in the passenger seat. I got in the car and he told me we have three properties to shovel. Two of them are in Hyde Park and the other one is in Fields Corner. He said he’ll pay me, but I said no I just want my laptop back. My mom took my laptop away because I had bad grades. So he agreed and we drove to Fields Corner. I was starving in the car. I told him and we picked up some breakfast at New York Pizza on Mass. Ave. We started off in Fields Corner. It was still snowing, but it was a light snow. The wind was blowing so hard that my hood kept falling off. I didn’t have my gloves on the first round so I wasn’t shoveling well. We finished shoveling, and then my Dad got the salt machine to spread the salt. On to the next one, a big house in Hyde Park. We had to do the front and back. The porch was as big as a whale.

Janell BonnerMarch 28,2011E Block Last summer my family and I were celebrating both me and my brothers graduation. Me graduating from eighth grade and he from fifth grade. He a graduate from Lee academy and I from James p. Timilty middle school. We traveled the week after he and I graduated and I came backfrom a school trip to New York. \We met up with my mother’s best friend and were on a road trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania. The road trip was confusing once we got past New York and New Jersey. We kept having to stop and ask for directions. All in the entire road trip was exhausting. Once we finally got there we had to spend about another hour checking into our hotel rooms. It was all worth it once we got into our rooms. I had to share a room with my sister who was annoying but it was a good thing that we rarely spent much time in the rooms. During the time we stayed at our hotel we swam, played in the gaming room and ate a lot of chocolate waffles. On the second day of the trip we went to Hershey’s park. We rode a trolley from the parking lot to the main entrance of the park. We had to wait in line for ten minutes then we split into groups depending on who wanted to ride certain rides. Since I was afraid of the certain roller coasters I got stuck with my little brother Nyshawn and the rest of the adults. While my sister Tailon and Brother Jimiel got to go with the rest of the teenagers. While they were going on monstrous rides, I was stuck on the smaller rides. After two hours of riding we met up to eat. We sat down to see a performance of “The Milk Men” while the different candy characters danced around such as Twizzlers, Hershey’s, and reeses. Time went by and it was time to go back to the hotel. On the way home we stopped by outlet malls and spent a little bit of time shopping then retreated. The rest of our stay was uneventful except for going out to eat.

Three things that give me pleasure are my laptop, my home, and my family. I use my laptop for many things. I use it for homework, to play games, and to chat with my family from Spain, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. My home gives me pleasure in numerous ways. The main things my home provides me are warmth, and safety. I enjoy being home because I have my own room and I consider my sanctuary. It’s a place where I can be myself and no one can bother me- except my mother. My family does a lot for me. If I had a million dollars, I would not spend one cent on myself until I give to my family first. I would buy them whatever they desire on this planet. Three things that make me proud of myself are my friends, school and my maturity. I feel that my friends are a big part of my life. Whenever I am sad or having a rough day, my friends are there to make me smile, laugh and help me forget about what’s bothering me. It helps a lot because then once I forget about what was bothering me, I go about my day and stay focused on what’s more important. School is a main part of my life. I know it’s what’s going to get me to where I want to be in the future, so it makes me proud to wake up every day to having the opportunity to change my life. My maturity has developed a lot over the past year. It all started on graduation day when my uncle gave me a speech about how important high school is. He said, “This is no time to joke around, high school is your key to success. You only have one chance to accomplish it and if you mess up, that’s it. So clean up your act, straighten out your attitude, and prove those teachers that you are a STAR; because you are my star.” There was a time where I really messed up. I went to one of my cousins birthday parties and I took a sip of someones alocohol when I wasn’t supposed to and my uncle found out. He was very upset with me, but I apologized and I made up for my mistake. I feel that what he said, is what helped make me to be the person I am today, an OFFICIAL honor roll student! Three things I am grateful for are my siblings, hair, and teeth. It feels good to be the oldest of 4. I feel like that is another reason why I am mature. Being oldest of four makes me realize that me need to set a good example because my siblings look up to me in that way. I’m “nina”, the one they look forward to seeing graduate from law school (I hope.) It feels good to be a role model. My hair is something I am grateful for because its soft and straight. A lot of people tell me that they wish they had my hair because its so easy to handle and I don’t have to worry about gel and hairspray etc. So I consider myself pretty fortunate for that feature. One last thing I am grateful for are my teeth. I get many compliments on my teeth because of how straight they are. I never had to have braces or retainers. It is all natural which makes me pretty lucky. I also like my teeth for that reason.

When I was very little I went to my cousin’s house with my sister we were just chilling there for a little bit until I had to go to the bathroom. So when I went to the bathroom I saw a curling iron and it was sitting on top of the sink so I wanted to move it so it didn’t get wet but I didn’t grab it from the handle I grabbed it from the heated part and I didn’t know that it was on so I burned my entire left palm and I started crying and my sister and cousin put Colgate toothpaste on my hand and that really took away most of the pain. That’s how I now learned not to touch hot things if the plug is on it or check to see if it was on by pouring a drop of water on to it to see if it sizzles that means its on and hot but if doesn’t sizzle that means its not that hot or its off. Well I didn’t have to go to the hospital because it was only a first degree burn and it didn’t burn off my skin so it just healed on its own. And that’s the story that had happened to me when I was like in 2nd grade I was about like 6 years old at the time so I really didn’t know any better but now I know.

One day when I was in the 7th grade I was sitting down paying attention and talking to my friends in class, in room number 342. It was Ms. Simon’s room. Then when I say one thing stupid about the question that I got wrong this person I don’t even like started to come out his mouth (which means saying something bad). Then I told him to repeat himself, and he did so then the teacher told me to sit down and I left it alone. Then like 10 minutes later when class was over I walked out the classroom and he came right by me and pushed me and I didn’t like it so then I asked him “what is your problem?” he replied “nothing I just don’t like you!”. Then I said “alright leave it at that” and I walked away. As soon as I walked away he grabbed my shoulder, turnt me around and punched me in my face. I was mad. I thought to myself “what would be the consequences for my actions?”, there was a lot. So I stopped, then the teacher came by ask “what is going on here?!”, I said “nothing”. This was a good choice. After that I went to my locker and waited for my bus. When the next day came I saw him again. I didn’t even paid any attention to him and I kept on walking while he kept on staring at me. Then I just went on my school day.

Roudy Charitable

Roudy Charitable March 24, 2011 Narrative Essay One thing that I am proud of is when I was able to change my ways from a bad student to a better student at the age of 14 because the way I acted before was not the way is not gonna help me get no where in life….for example before I was just a bad child that didn’t care about life or his family anymore. When I would go to Brook farm academy, I would do no work and just sit there and chill or choose to act bad in class by throwing things, shout-out, make people laugh, ask dumb questions and be annoying just to be a class clown. But now I realize that its not that time of the year too be acting like that anymore. I changed my ways after my mentor told me about the life of a high school student. I think that its time for me to step and take responsibility for what I’m doing in school and what I need to do to become and better person because I need to represent myself in school As of right now I’m doing way better then before because I don’t want to repeat the 9th grade for this year… I want to pass and move onto the 10th grade with all my other friends so that I won’t look like a dummy in front of my whole family and friends because now I know that freshmen year isn’t the year to be messing up anymore. Its for me to doing all my work and staying focus on all of my work and less time for fun , partying, and chilling with my bro’s. another that I am proud of is my ability to play basketball. I am proud of that because playing basketball is what keep me active and energetic every time. When I play I would stay calm and kill everyone that’s steps in my way on the court. Most of the time I feel I will choose ball over everything. But there is more things I need to learn so that I can become the best. There’s not much things that I am proud because now I limit my things so that I will focus on school and making it all the way to college and not stay back in the same grade. Roudy Charitable need to become a man for a good finish as a 9th grader this year.

Janell Bonner

Janell Bonner March 22, 2011 Narrative Essay Once on a misty fall day at the Joseph Lee Elementary School my second grades class and I were seated in our elementary school library. The library was not very big and had old dusty bookshelves mounted to the wall. The middle was the librarian’s desk, and on the far right side were a couple of desks and chairs used as a classroom. We were instructed to read the rest of our library book. My book was The Little’s by John Peterson. It was about an almost microscopic family trying to escape the troubles of their every day life such as avoiding getting eaten by a cat. After an hour had passed she told us that we could start to tell our partner about our books. So I turned to my neighbor, who was one of my best friend’s Leon. He began to tell me about his book which was his favorite genre, action. After fifteen minutes he was done and it was my turn. I began to tell him about my book and he began to look less interested. I went on and on until I was finished and he continued to have that same look. He and I began to talk while we waited for others to finish. He being a class clown, began to joke around causing me to laugh. After a while, the librarian Miss Sister Verdia told us that if we didn’t keep quit she would kick us both out. So we sat there in silence and I stared out of the foggy window at the trees and the leaves drifting from the branches. We sat there in silence for about five more minutes until Miss Sister Verdia told us to start to bring our books back. She called us up by table, because Leon and my was in the back we ended up being last. We got up and swiftly walked to her desk. After she was done checking our books back in I started to run back to my seat. As I was getting closer to my desk I began to trip on the green and black rug. I fell and hit the side of my head right above my left eye on the corner of the table. I got back up quickly and my friend began to ask me if I were okay and I said “yes”. I felt a little woozy and my friend informed me that the side of my face was bleeding. I was rushed in a wheel chair to the nurse and nurse Debbie informed me that my mother would need to come and that I would need to to get stiches. She put a butterfly bandaid on it for the time being until my mother came. After ten minutes my mother picked me up and we were on our way to the hospital. I had to get about ten stiches that would go away within a week. After the procedure my mother informed me that if the cut went a quarter of an

Oris Mesa

Oris Mesa Narrative writing March 15, 2011 It was a dark story and very quiet night on River Street in Hyde Park. My friends and I had finished watching “Takers” at the movies. We didn’t want to be home early so we chose to take the long way home. We walked down River Street and as soon as we hit the intersection of Jack Street and River Street my friend John pointed out two things at the end of the street. At first we didn’t know what the two things were but as we got closer we started to notice that those two things happen to be two big black dogs. I told my friends that we should turn around but they didn’t want to because they were pretty sure that these two big black dogs were friendly. As we got closer the dogs moved father away and Jose said to me” see told you oris why do u have to be such a little scary cat”. Then he kicks a can and as soon as the two dogs heard the can they stopped and looked straight at us and and we stopped as well. I whispered to Jose “you idiot why did you do that”. we started to walk slowly away from the dogs but they followed. We decided to run on the count of three’ but I couldn’t wait because I hate dogs so as soon as they said “one” I ran for my life and the dogs started to chase behind me. We tried jumping over a fence to lose the dogs but they jumped over it too. At one point my other friend Tim fell and told us, “Leave without me” we said “ok” and he said “no it was a joke. Gosh you guys are mean.” So we helped him up and we looked back to see if we had lost the dogs and strangely they were right there behind us just watching us until one of them barked and we started running again. My house was about two houses down so as soon as I got there, I ran into my house. I don’t know if everyone made it home but I didn’t really care. I was just happy that I was home.

David Bertucci

David Bertucci March 24, 2011 Narrative Essay On a Sunday morning in the fall of 2005. I woke up to the smell of my mother cooking me breakfast for my Pop Warner Football game against the Hyde Park Cowboys. I played quarterback for the West Roxbury Falcons. It was our second game of the season. I left my house ready to play the game at around 9:00. I couldn’t wait to play this game, Hyde Park was our rival’s. Both teams hated each other. We where playing them at there home field in Hyde Park. As we pulled up to there field I could hear there fans yelling and screaming. I love to play football my whole family does all my cousins uncle they all played and went to college on a football scholarship. I got to the field to see half of my team warming up and the other half of the team looked like they just woke up. At half time the score was 14 to 0. We where losing. We had the ball to begin the second half. The first play was a tight end pop pass. I said “Hut” and the center snapped the ball. Not one of my line men threw a block for me. I tried to make something happed so I threw the ball and my arm hit the other guy’s helmet. I didn’t know it yet but my arm was broken in two places. I rolled around on the ground for 5 minutes waiting for the paramedic to come which was actually a person who worked at the concession stand. They told me to hold my arm and they moved me to the bench where they cut my jersey off and put ice on my neck to prevent me from going into shock. I took one glance at my arm and I knew it was broken it was one of the nastiest things ive ever seen. My arm literately looked like a U. After about 10 minutes the EMT’S showed up. They put me on the stretcher and took me to the ambulance. I felt like it took forever to get to the hospital, and when I finally got there I didn’t feel much better. They took me to the x ray room. When the asked me to move my arm if I tried to move it, it felt like somebody was beating it with a bat. After about an hour of waiting the doctor walks in fresh out of surgery and says there going to operate on my arm. He throws a picture of the x ray up. I almost threw up when I saw one of my fore arm bones snapped and hit the other one causing that one to break as well. The last thing I remember seeing was the picture of my arm and then I was knocked out. When I woke up I had a cast on my arm and my mother and father where there. They made me leave in a wheelchair. When I got home I couldn’t sleep. That’s how it was for the next 4 months until they took my cast of in December. Every Friday I had to go to physical therapy to help my arm heal. The first time they cut the cast off I was scared. I heard a saw and I thought they where going to take my arm off but they just cut the cast off instead. I’ll never forget that day.
